Review of the top 6 Online Shopping sites in India

There are hundreds of online sites in India, each having its own advantages and disadvantage each. This article will speak about the leading 6 stores and little bit about their pro’s and cons

1.     Flipkart
2.     Homeshop18
3.     Snapdeal
4.     eBay
5.     Jabong
6.     Myntra

Flipkart Review

Flipkart in a way has been the face of the Indian e-commerce story, Flipkart started selling Books, later on went on to acquire Letsbuy to enter in to electronics, but after which there was no stopping them. They entered apparels, kitchen appliances, home appliances and many more categories. They recently shifted from being an inventory led company to marketplace.

Flipkart was always known for its service, there where instance when a customer would have ordered book in morning and receive it by evening. This level of service has reduced a little but still they amongst the best in terms of service, a little lack I would attribute to the number of categories which they have entered into. They have also setup their own logistics infrastructure and now are rumored to have built their payment gateway as well.

One thing flipkart is not know for is coupons as they never provide any, but they are known to provide great deals.

Homeshop18 Review

Started as a teleshopping brand, moved online Homeshop18 is a part of network18 group. With a strong digital background and retailing experience, Homeshop18 has proven that they could do it right; it’s a tightly managed market place with lot of vendors and homeshop18 managing the show

They are horizontal player showcasing almost all categories. Homeshop18 are known for their superdeals, which are released in advance and tend to give massive discount on latest electronics.

Homeshop18 are also know for giving out lot of coupons, which are either product specific or category specific

Snapdeal Review

Snapdeal started as a daily deal website, and gaining tremendous reach in a very short time. They started with selling restaurant and spa deals for across India. When the daily deal phase started to diminish they entered into selling products. As they always had loads an loads of suppliers for their deals, they continued being a market place when they entered selling product as well

They have always relied on giving out coupons, and they generally give out coupons on different categories, instead on Individual products

They still have deals for restaurant and spa’s but the focus on them is very limited now

eBay Review

eBay is leader in being a market place across the globe, and they have replicated the same model in India, they entered India by acquiring Bazeee, and recently they also picked up a minority stake in Snapdeal, dut to their synergies.

eBay is very well know to have started the crazy trend of  giving deals on soaps, shampoos at Rs. 9 or 19. They are also known for giving our coupons with the value of Rs.100 off on Rs. 150 or flat Rs. 50 off

Jabong & Myntra Review

Jabong & Myntra are inventory led companies, with a strong focus on fashion, Myntra more than Jabong.

They do not give out huge discounted coupons, but have sale very often, brand sales, category sale, starting from 40% off to more than 70% off on brands like Nike, Reebok and also international brands

Hurdles of online shopping in India – Buyers perspective

Online shopping in India is at a very nascent stage, with not many users actually trying it out. In a country of more than a billion, less than 10% of the population gets online, of which a fraction do shopping online. Why is this the case and what needs to be changed, this article tries to brush upon few of these issues and how they can be solved

Online shopping across the globe is done for mainly one reason that is convenience as for many of them; things are not available near to where they stay. But in India that’s not the case, as for most of us getting things is just round the corner. So what are the reasons why Indians would shop online, currently its only price advantage. This is mainly provided by giving them Deals or Coupons to reduce the prices then the offline market.

Even after doing that consumers are not willing to shop online, what does then stop them?
  • Lack of trust in the online channel
  • Non availability of credit card
  • Lack of awareness

These are just some of the reasons, and this can be easily be addressed by online merchants. The first two points can be solved with one simple solution is buy providing cash on delivery, by doing this the merchants can achieve to things, one they can reach a wider population tapping into non credit card/debit card owning population. Second it can also give ease and comfort for the buyers, as they have the surety of seeing the goods before making the purchase.

The other element is lack of awareness amongst the buyers, where to find the best deal or which store to buy from and where not. Merchants also release coupons in the market to attract customers, but how do buyers get that.

For this there are sites like Dealdunia, which aggregates deals and coupons from all the sites like flipkart, ebay, homeshop18, Jabong, Zovi, Myntra and many more. They categorize these deals in different categories such as Electronics, Mobile, Fashion, Home appliance etc. and all of this is free, buyer has to pay nothing for these coupons or deals. They just acts as a platform for providing the information the merchants want to pass to the prospective buyers
